Redmi 9 Review: The Best Budget Phone You Can Buy.
Introduction:
Xiaomi’s Redmi phones are top budget offerings in India, and that’s why every of the phones in the Redmi series usually ends up selling so well even if you go for the older Redmi 5 and 5A. In this article, we’ll be covering the new Redmi 9. As its name suggests, it is the first phone from Xiaomi with a ‘9’ branding since it was launched back in May this year. The Redmi 9 is a mid-range offering which still manages to come in under Rs. 20,000 thanks to its gorgeous display, dual rear cameras, and powerful processor. Specs Xiaomi Redmi 9 has a 5.84-inch IPS LCD display with an aspect ratio of 19:9 and a screen resolution of 2280 x 1080 pixels. The Redmi 9 is made out of metal and glass and there’s an iPhone X-like notch at the top of the display.
Design:
The Redmi 9 feels substantial, owing to its 6.26-inch display. And for a budget smartphone with a budget price tag, the Redmi 9 offers an elegant metal body with curved glass. The phone has a rounded metal frame and a slim-bezel design with thin bezels at the top and bottom. It feels quite sturdy and is made of a single sheet of metal. The phone offers a great grip and seems quite secure. The rear also offers a bit of flare, with the dual cameras, LED flash and fingerprint sensor sitting on the top left corner. Overall, the design does have its flaws. © MensXP/Akshay Bhalla The Redmi 9 feels substantial, owing to its 6.26-inch display. Display:
The Redmi 9 boasts a 5.46-inch, 19:9 aspect ratio IPS display that offers full HD+ resolution of 2340 x 1080 pixels and an impressive pixel density of 450ppi. It features a screen-to-body ratio of 81.6%. The display is bright, sharp and has good viewing angles, which is pretty much the case with most IPS panel. Colors are vivid and the viewing angles are decent, but we wish the screen were more colour accurate and contrasty. The display is one of the major attractions on the Redmi 9, and in our opinion it is far superior to that of the Xiaomi Mi A2 Lite (Review) and the Honor 9 Lite (Review). The Redmi 9's display is bright, has good contrast and brightness levels, and offers good viewing angles. The display performs well in bright sunlight too.
Performance:
We were surprised that Xiaomi's new budget phone, the Redmi 9, didn't get an upgrade in terms of specifications, considering that we are so close to the release of the Redmi Note 7. Despite that, there were only minor changes. The Redmi 9 is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 632 chipset, which is an octa-core CPU with a base clock of 1.8GHz and a peak clock of 2.0GHz. It has two Cortex-A73 cores and four Cortex-A53 cores. The smartphone supports up to 8GB of RAM, which is why it's no surprise that it had great performance. The chipset, coupled with Adreno 506 GPU, makes games look better and offer a smoother experience. We played titles like Asphalt 9: Legends and Riptide GP2 on the Redmi 9 without any issue, which is something we haven't seen in any previous Xiaomi device.
Camera:
The Redmi 9 comes with dual-camera setup with a 12-megapixel primary sensor and a 5-megapixel secondary sensor. The rear camera setup works on Artificial Intelligence (AI) to optimise images and it’s fast, especially the portrait mode. We got some very detailed shots from the camera which had good colour reproduction, no graininess, and solid depth of field effect. We were able to check out the camera performance in various lighting conditions including a lit outdoor plaza, a dark, rainy alley, and a night portrait shot. Even low-light shots were nice and sharp. The dual-rear cameras support AI portrait mode and the AI works on picking the subject and adjusts the background to give a realistic blur effect.
Battery:
2,600mAh battery In the battery test conducted on Redmi Note 6 Pro, the new smartphone lasted over 9 hours and 20 minutes while the last phone with a 4000mAh battery lasted almost 14 hours in the same test. However, it should be noted that the lower capacity battery on the Redmi Note 6 Pro could have a negative impact on the battery life on this device. The device also supports 10W rapid charger which can juice the battery up to 70 percent in one hour. Verdict The Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 smartphone is undoubtedly one of the best-looking smartphones you can buy in its segment. However, the display is too reflective and the build quality is not that impressive. If you buy the Redmi Note 7 for its cameras and thin bezels, then you can definitely get the better battery performance.
Conclusion:
It's clear from the performance and features of the Redmi 9 that this is the best budget phone one can buy right now. Even its camera, while still not great, is pretty good and easily worth the price of its body. I'm not convinced about the design of its rear, which leaves much to be desired, and the performance of the display leaves a lot to be desired, but those are hardly dealbreakers for the potential buyers. This phone is also the most appealing to the average buyer, at least right now. It's great for light gaming, watching videos and streaming content, and that's just about it. For power users, its battery, processor and RAM may leave a lot to be desired, but for a one-time purchase of this phone, what's the harm in it? A lot.
